Determine Sample Size

You will be calculating the appropriate sample size to conduct the audit on in order to ensure a reasonable level of confidence in the accuracy of the results.

Time to Perform is 5 minutes

+ Why

The purpose of the audit is to determine the state of the best practices being used in your workflows. Doing a couple audits and assuming the rest are the same doesn’t help determine it at all.

Alternatively, if you have a large team, you can sample a portion to gain enough insight to have a reasonable idea of the level of discrepancy that exists. For example, if you have 200 team members and audit 132 of them and they all perform the best practice the same way then there is a 95% chance that all 200 perform it the same way. Now you could do the 68 remaining audits but that really becomes a case of diminishing returns.

Now let’s say that during the audit you identify different best practices taking place. Having a representative sample size will provide insight into the scope of the issue. This will help build a business case by providing an ROI on what you did with the audit and what you can accomplish with resolving the best practice discrepancies. This turns a feel good story into a money saving hero story that you and your team can tout.
